Non-Members Pricing - October 7th: 'Hate Crimes & Radicalization in your Community?' with Irfan Chaudhry, M.A. (Criminal Justice)

Hate crimes and radicalization are serious issues that can deeply impact communities. Hate can be a precursor of individual and group violence and conflict and can feed further hate. Hate is often fuelled by feelings of desperation, a lack of control and powerlessness, and it is associated with a willingness to obliterate and destroy the enemy. Haters do not need to know the people they hate, but only what they represent. In this sense, hate can be a precursor of both hate crime and violent extremism.

It is important to understand what hate crimes and radicalization mean, the impact it can have on lives and the importance of awareness and education.

Irfan Chaudhry has been working over the years to increase awareness about how to address hate from both a community and law enforcement perspective. Even though hate crime is extreme and clearly defined within the Canadian Criminal Code, Irfan says that there are many other small, insidious ways that hate creeps into our lives. Unchecked, biases, subtle microaggressions or borderline hate incidents can ultimately contribute to an environment that feeds hate-motivated crimes.

This webinar will explore hate crimes and radicalization from the perspective of an educator, police governor and community member.
